On July 2nd 2014, Gartner released their annual Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure. I went ahead and superimposed the past three years in a chart to see the movement of all the major players in this space.
Please note, the chart was only created by using Adobe tools and is not scientific. The borders of each chart were matched up to create it.
Each of the past three years, VMware and Microsoft have been named as leaders in this category. Citrix has gone from a leader, to a visionary, to a niche player in the past three years. In the past year, Gartner shows that Red Hat made the most progress. Oracle maintained their status (albeit barely) as a challenger.
For the first time in the past 3 years, Gartner Research introduced a new company into the x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure Magic Quadrant, Huawei and FusionSphere.
There were no companies dropped from the Magic Quadrant in the past year.
